The Thinking Patient
ABOUT
We are all patients, whether we are sick or well. Maybe not all of the time, but at least for the important health-related times in our life. For some, this happens more frequently than others. The story of my illness is singular. But, many of the things I have found through my journey are universal.
It has taken me a long time to figure out what I now consider fundamental skills for communicating with highly trained medical professionals, our doctors. Even though I have been working in the healthcare administration field for over 30 years, it took me being a patient to understand and develop a greater capacity to engage fully in my care.
My name is Dana E. Sherwin and I have held executive roles in healthcare organizations of various types including hospitals, a hospital association, a managed care plan and three of the largest public accounting/consulting firms in the United States. I hold a Master of Health Services Administration degree from The University of Michigan’s School of Public Health and a Bachelor of Science degree from Cornell University. I am a Fellow in the American College of Healthcare Executives.
